Bluefin Fish Commands Historic Bid of $3.2m at Japanese Capital New Year Sale
A massive bluefin tuna made headlines at the Tokyo's Toyosu fish market this Monday, garnering a record-breaking bid of 510.3 million yen ($3.2m; £2.4m) during the venue's inaugural auction of the calendar year.
The top bid for the 243kg fish was placed by the company of a nationwide sushi chain, which manages restaurants domestically and internationally.
"The first tuna signals a prosperous start," commented the company president, a notable participant at the traditional new year's auction.
Known as the Tuna King, this industry figure is renowned for making record bids for bluefin tuna at these high-profile year-opening auctions.
Bidding Shock and Record-Setting Past
Following the auction, the winner told reporters that he was "astonished at the final price," adding, "I had thought we would be able to acquire it a little for less, but the price skyrocketed rapidly."
This new purchase surpasses his previous notable purchases:
- He secured a tuna for 56.5 million yen back in 2012.
- He paid 155 million yen the following year.
- In 2019, he purchased a tuna for 333.6 million yen ($2.1 million).
Even after once commenting that he thought he "bid too high," he has now managed to shatter his personal record once again.
An Annual Spectacle of High Prices
The first auction at the Tokyo fish market is typically characterized by exceptionally high prices. In the prior year, the initial tuna was purchased for 207 million yen by another culinary group, which announced the fish would be featured at its locations nationwide.
The high-energy activity at the fish market during these pre-dawn auctions has transformed into a must-see spectacle in Tokyo. Monday's auction, which started around 05:00 local time, was no exception.
From Auction to Plate
The extremely valuable tuna was quickly prepared for patrons at the bidder's sushi chains soon after the auction ended.
"I feel like I've begun the year in a auspicious way after tasting something so lucky as the year starts," shared one elated diner.
