The loved ones of teenagers unaccounted for after a deadly blaze at a bar in a Switzerland's alpine town are facing an excruciating wait for official news and appealing for clues about their family members publicly.

The inferno devastated the Le Constellation bar in Cans-Montana, located in the Alps of south-west Switzerland, in the early hours of the first day of the year. Verified images show the ceiling being engulfed in flames as bottles with fireworks are held aloft.

Officials have indicated that it could take considerable time to identify the victims of the fire, which resulted in the death of four dozen individuals and wounded another scores more. A spokesperson said on Friday that the majority of the injured have been identified, with the process continuing to locate the final individuals.
